With strict pandemic restrictions feeling like a long-ago bad dream in the majority of countries, it’s easy to start feeling like we’re living in a post-Covid world.
For many, however, the after-effects of Covid illness still loom large.
As early as spring of 2020, a number of Covid-19 patients began describing symptoms that persisted weeks or months after a full recovery would have been expected, with complaints ranging from shortness of breath, coughing and chest pain, to fatigue, headaches, brain fog, even anxiety and depression.
The perplexing new condition, formally dubbed “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2”, has come to be known colloquially as Long Covid.
Though research into its causes and prevalence is still ongoing, a study by the University of California, Los Angeles concluded that as many as 30% of patients who received Covid treatment went on to become “long haulers”, as Long Covid patients are often called. Early research into the root of the syndrome points to organ damage, ongoing inflammation, blood clots and the weakening of blood vessels as possible reasons for the physical symptoms of the condition, while post-traumatic stress disorder following a harrowing experience in the intensive care unit could contribute to the mental health issues observed in certain patients.
Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa
In Baden-Baden, Germany at the luxurious Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa, esteemed Clinic Director and Head of Brenners Medical Care Dr Harry König has seen a number of clients exhibiting the signs of Long Covid, with the most common symptoms including “physical and psychological exhaustion, weakened immune system with clustered infections, hair loss, impaired concentration, and problems with breathing due to limited lung capacity,” he says. “The problems that appear are complex and usually very limiting,” he adds.
Distressingly, Long Covid appears to strike without any discernible rhyme or reason. Whereas more severe cases of Covid-19 can be expected in individuals with preexisting conditions, allowing healthcare providers and patients to prepare and act accordingly, Long Covid often affects previously healthy patients as well.
“Patients with preexisting conditions such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension are more affected by complicated and prolonged Covid illness,” Dr König notes. “However, it has been shown that patients who have a mild case of infection often develop so-called Long Covid syndrome. This is also the case in patients who have not had any previous disease or preexisting condition.”

Although much is still to be learned about Long Covid, its causes and longer-term effects, what is clear is that symptoms can be managed to significantly improve a patient’s health and quality of life. Given that each patient presents with different symptoms and underlying issues, there is no one cure or medication. Rather, the key to effective treatment lies in an individualised approach.
Under the top-level care of Dr König at Brenners, patients can expect exactly such highly personalised, one-on-one treatment, blending practices from both holistic medicine and the latest medical science research. “We have the great advantage of drawing from the therapeutic possibilities that traditional naturopathic medicine offers,” says Dr König. “In addition, our treatments are targeted with nutrients, vitamins and minerals whose deficiencies are directly related to the chronic nature of the disease. After thorough testing and diagnostics, these deficiencies are corrected, and immunodeficiency is treated in an individual, specific way. This approach in combination with hypoxia therapy (to treat low blood oxygen levels and resulting lack of oxygen in the tissue) has proved to be very successful.”
“Clients at Brenners Medical Care can expect a clean diagnosis adapted to their symptoms, and therapy tailored to the individual in conjunction with optimised exercise and diet,” Dr König assures. “Here we achieve the best possible results for the individual.”
